In the case of virus infections there is at present no cure, so that the only thing to do is to prevent the infection spreading. Therefore the insect vectors must be killed before they have a chance to transmit virus, whether or not they are carrying the infection. A dahlia which has been the object of a serious infestation of either thrips or aphides may not become infected with virus, but it is much better to be safe than sorry.

The fruit-bodies of this fungus, covered with a thick layer of gelatinous slime, appear after rain at the end of the summer and in the autumn. At first sight they are reminiscent of Boletus grevillei, with which they share many common characteristics and a similar habitat. They are closely related to the Bolctaceae family.
Some growers advocate that the plants should be cut down to a point about 6 to 8 in. above ground level; personally I cannot see much virtue in this practice as the stump will dry out and die during the winter, and the hollow stems will only act as a sump for any rain which may fall during the period between cutting down and lifting.
