Decisions About Your First Date

You’ve been chatting online with a really great guy or gal and you’ve both been enjoying yourselves. You realize it’s time to meet in person. While the prospect gives you delicious butterflies, you can’t help but wonder whether to meet for just a coffee or a drink or if you should push the boat out and go for dinner.

More to the point, how are you going to decide who pays? Money can be a sore point for some people. Some divorce because of it, others argue about it nonstop, and friendships have been known to end because of it. It’s such a touchy subject that ignites so many emotions. Dating should be fun, so how do you decide?

The answer would lie in how comfortable you feel with the person and if talking about money would be an issue. Traditionally most guys would be open to paying for dinner, or drinks for the few first dates. This makes it easier and allows the two people to get to know one another without talking about money.

Provided that things go well, you might even end up in a relationship. Things will progress naturally and that usually results in a fair exchange. Most women are more than willing to pay their fair share of things. But that’s getting ahead of ourselves. Before you get there, here are some things to think about;

1. Decide when and where you want to meet

This is critical for a first date. Women are usually more cautious than men about meeting for the first time and most prefer to meet while it is still daylight and in a public place. The man may have a totally different idea for a date in mind, so it’s important that you talk about this before going out.

2. Decide where you are going

Now that the “when” is out of the way, here comes the “where”. Are you going to meet for a coffee, enjoy a lunch or dinner together, go to a museum or an art gallery? The possibilities are endless. You’ve been chatting online for a while so you should have a good grasp of each others’ likes.

3. Discuss dress attire.

Where you decide to go will usually dictate what you’re going to wear. A hike is going to require something totally different from dinner at a swanky French restaurant. You want to have the most comfortable first date possible, so don’t over or under dress for the occasion.

You’ve decided the when, where and what. Now it’s time to let nature take its course. Have fun getting to know each other, that’s what first dates are all about. It’s not mandatory to discuss who pays for what and there will always to time to bring it up during the date itself. Now relax, and remember to smile!
